abstract = "The vegetation of the Caatinga biome presents seasonal variations,
where the climate is characterized by a seasonality in
precipitation levels. These variations can be recognized through
the interpretation of vegetation indices. The objective of this
study was to evaluate the vegetation index by calculating the
Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Soil Adjusted
Vegetation Index (SAVI), in the Caatinga biome of Sergipe state,
detecting the seasonal variation and the spectral behavior of
vegetated areas -, in different densities of vegetation cover.
Sensor OLI images of the Landsat satellite 8, during January,
April, July, August and October of 2015, was used. A Geographic
Information System (GIS) of six sample plots were placed, using a
5x5 pixels for each category: pasture, caatinga vegetation dense
and caatinga vegetation altered. The values of the NDVI and SAVI
indices were calculated from the pixels mean of the parcels. The
results showed highest values of NDVI and SAVI in the months with
higher precipitation and lower values in periods of drought. The
density of the vegetation cover influenced the values of NDVI and
SAVI, with higher values in areas with high vegetation density
when compared with lower vegetation density. Moreover, the
vegetation of the study area was better discriminated by SAVI
                         index.",
